Funds and Research Funds

In 1991, the Maunsell Consultants Asia Limited agreed to donate $50,000 a year for five years to the University for the establishment of a Civil Engineering Visiting Fellowship, known as Maunsell Civil Engineering Visiting Fellowship to be awarded annually. The Fellowship was renamed AECOM Civil Engineering Visiting Fellowship in 2010.

The Fund was established in 1974 by donations from friends, colleagues and past students of the late Professor A.J.S. McFadzean, Professor of Medicine from 1948 to 1974, for the purpose of furthering postgraduate education in the Department of Medicine. The Fund was renamed as A.J.S. McFadzean Memorial Fund in 2014 with donations from staff and students of the late Professor A.J.S. McFadzean for the purpose of maintaining the high standard of teaching, practice and research in Medicine.

In June 2011, the Arthur Yau Memorial Fund in Orthopaedics was set up in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology to honour the late Professor Arthur Yau’s lifelong contribution to the field of Orthopaedics and the spirit in which he cared for his patients. The purpose of the fund is to sponsor a number of programmes in one or more of the areas of orthopaedics education, patient care, an annual fellowship for clinicians in orthopaedics to study in HKU, and research endowments.

In 2014, the Bau Family pledged to donate a sum of $100 million for the establishment of the Bau Tsu Zung Bau Kwan Yeu Hing Fund in honour of their parents. The Fund supports four scholarships/schemes: (a) Bau Tsu Zung Bau Kwan Research and Clinical Fellowship, (b) Bau Tsu Zung Bau Kwan Yeu Hing Research Start Up Award, (c) Bau Tsu Zung Bau Kwan Yeu Hing Scholarship, and (d) Bau Tsu Zung Bau Kwan Yeu Hing Springboard Scholarship.

In 1987, Mr Cheung Tze Fong, owner of Tin Foo Investment Company, donated a sum of $1 million for the purpose of promoting education and research in diabetes and endocrinology in the Department of Medicine.

In 1986, 1987 and 1988, Mr Choi Kin Chung donated a total sum of $140,000 for the establishment of the Choi Kin Chung Fellowship to promote technology transfer in the field of civil engineering.

In 1992, a sum of $3.93 million was donated to the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine by the late Mrs Christine Kwok to award research grants to full-time teachers or other staff of equivalent rank and for the installation of medical research equipment in the Faculty.

In 1982, Tak Wing Investment (Holdings) Limited donated $100,000 to the University for the establishment of the Chung Biu Fellowship to promote technology transfer in the field of civil engineering.

In 2003, a sum of $1.85 million was donated to the Department of Chemistry by the late Mrs Dorothy Ada Collins who passed away in 2002 to establish a Collins Memorial Fund. Part of the interest generated from the memorial fund shall be used for scholarship awards in Chemistry.

In 1996, Dr Clyde Wu donated a sum of $1 million to the Medical Faculty for the establishment of the Dr and Mrs Clyde Wu Fund for various specified activities in the Faculty.

In 1996, the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine (the Medical Faculty) received a generous donation from Dr Cheng Yu Tung to establish the Dr Cheng Yu Tung Fellowships. The Scheme supports Fellows from Mainland China to undertake clinical attachment, clinical research training and health care management training under relevant Departments/Schools of the Medical Faculty. The Scheme was revamped in 2016–17 with a newly defined focus on clinical and healthcare management training, which aims to attract high calibre clinicians with clear vision to strive for excellence and determination to contribute to healthcare and clinical advancement in Mainland China.

In 1991, the Hui family donated a sum of $3 million in memory of the late Dr Stephen S.F. Hui to support research and scholarly activities related to earth sciences (in geology), including environmental applications, geotechnics and engineering geology.

Since 2015, the Edward Wong Group has donated $1 million annually for the establishment of the Edward and Yolanda Wong Fund. The Fund aims to provide matching money for the studentship of research postgraduate students who pursue degree from the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong.

In 1987, Mr Joseph E. Hotung of Hong Kong donated a sum of $2.5 million to establish a fund for the purpose of promoting education and research in the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

The purpose of the Endowment Fund for Japanese Studies is to promote better understanding of Japan and its global relations in Hong Kong and internationally, with a view to the increase of international peace and prosperity. The Endowment Fund will achieve these ends by underpinning the development at the University of Hong Kong of the best centre for the study of Japan in continental Asia. It will provide resources for the highest quality teaching programme in Japanese Studies, which will nurture graduates with outstanding linguistic, analytical, and cultural skills and understanding to contribute to the local, national and global communities. It will also provide support for cutting-edge research of the highest order on Japan in the comparative and international context, in order to further understanding nationally and internationally. The Fund shall be used exclusively for the support of teaching and research in Japanese Studies.

In 1992, the Local Organizing Committee for the International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics donated $300,000 for the establishment of an Environmental Hydraulics Fund to promote academic exchange and technological transfer in the field of environmental hydraulics.

To promote bilingual legislation of the laws of Hong Kong, the Memorial Fund Limited made donation to the University to support the Eric Au Sing Wai Prize in the Use of Chinese in Law and Eric Au Sing Wai Memorial Fund Lectures in the Use of Chinese in Law, as well as mooting activities in the Faculty in memory of the late Eric Au Sing Wai.

With the generous donations from the Tin Ka Ping Foundation (the Foundation) in 2008 and 2019, the matching grant from the University Grants Committee, and the financial commitment from the University, a $11 million endowment fund, known as Faculty of Education, HKU Tin Ka Ping Education Fund, was established to support (a) the Tin Ka Ping Visiting Fellowship Scheme, which enables scholars from Greater China to come to Hong Kong for academic exchange, and (b) the organization of Distinguished Lectures and associated academic activities with relevance to Greater China.

In 2017, the Foundation pledged a generous gift of $15 million in support of the Faculty’s long-term development. The donation is used for the establishment of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation Postgraduate Fellowship for research postgraduate students, and the Tin Ka Ping Foundation Grant for Experiential Learning for taught postgraduate and undergraduate students.

In 2009, Dr Serena Yang donated a sum of $1.2 million under the Serena Yang Fund in the Faculty to establish the Fulbright Scholar Scheme in Social Sciences. The Fulbright Scholar Scheme in Social Sciences aims to support scholars to conduct postdoctoral research to extend the candidate’s doctoral dissertation and prepare it for publication as a monograph or a series of articles in major journals. The selected specialisations to be supported by the Scheme include political science, public administration, public policy, international relations, anthropology, sociology, psychology, geography, urban studies, social policy and social work. Projects focusing on Greater China or Asia are especially welcome.

Since 1995, members of the legal profession have been contributing to the fund which was established in memory of the late Gary Alderdice QC in the hope that a sum in the order of $300,000 could be raised to assist students of the Faculty of Law in representing the Faculty and the University in mooting competitions outside Hong Kong.

In 1978, Mr Francis Y.H. Tien of Hong Kong donated a sum of $1 million to establish the G.B. Ong Surgical Research Fund. In 1986, the title of the Fund was changed to G.B. Ong Surgical Fund which is for the purpose of development of the Department of Surgery.

The Visiting Fellowships were established in 1982 through donations from friends and colleagues of Professor Tan Sri G.B. Ong to enable academic staff of the Department of Surgery and medical graduates to undertake study or training overseas, and surgeons from other medical centres to visit the Department of Surgery for the purpose of teaching, research and training.

In 1978, Mr Haking Wong donated a sum of $6 million, half of which to be used for the support of research in the Faculty of Engineering and the provision of the necessary equipment for this purpose.

To commemorate its Golden Jubilee in 1983, Hang Seng Bank made a generous donation of $1 million to the former Centre of Asian Studies to support cross-disciplinary research and education activities in the Asian region. It is an internal fund for application by academic staff members and affiliates of the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (incorporating Centre of Asian Studies).

In December 1997, Madam Tam Shui donated a sum of $500,000 for the purpose of promoting postgraduate education and research in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in the Department of Surgery.

The History Endowment Fund was established through generous funding from alumni of the Department of History with the purpose of supporting departmental activities in history and historical studies. It regularly funds research travel for students as well as other capstone activities in the department’s undergraduate programme, as well as international graduate symposia.

In 1982, Mr H.K. Cheng donated $50,000 to the University for the establishment of a postgraduate scholarship. In 1991, Mr H.K. Cheng donated a further sum of $60,000 towards the establishment of the H.K. Cheng Structural Engineering Fellowship to replace the postgraduate scholarship, to be awarded annually.

The Hong Kong University Engineering Alumni Association agreed to donate a sum to the University annually to provide funds for the establishment of conference grants to be made available to research students registered in the Faculty of Engineering for a higher degree.

The HKU Social Sciences Pioneer Class of 1967 Fund shall be awarded to students or staff in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement; or shall be used to provide seed funding for academic related activities determined by the Faculty. The Fund may also be used to support the administration and management of faculty projects and programmes.

The Hong Kong Blood Cancer Foundation made a generous donation to the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, School of Clinical Medicine, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, to initiate the Hong Kong Blood Cancer Foundation Fund. Topped up annually by the Foundation, the fund provides financial assistance to lymphoma patients for performing PET/CT scans.

In 2007, Dr Laurence Hou initiated the Hou Pao-Chang Memorial Fund in tribute to his late father, Professor Hou Pao-Chang, an outstanding teacher and researcher and Head of Department of Pathology from 1948–1960. The purpose of the fund is to facilitate visits to the Department of Pathology by distinguished scholars from abroad, and support teaching and research in Pathology.

In 1979, Mr Howard Hsu, Managing Director of Kiu Foong International Limited of Hong Kong and son of the late Mr Hsu Long-sing, donated a sum of $2.5 million from the Hsu Long-sing Memorial Funds for the development of Chinese historical studies, China-West studies, and studies in the Chinese aspects of Fine Arts.

The Fund was established by a donation of $2 million in 1977 by the late Dr Stephen S.F. Hui in memory of his father Mr Hui Oi-Chow, supplemented by another donation of $1 million by the Hui family in 1991, to support research and scholarly activities in human and physical geography.

Hui Siu Wan Memorial Fund was established by an HKU alumnae of 1930s and is designated for the Hui Siu Wan Memorial Research Grant for Biomedical Research which aims to support the research work of new recruits of the Medical Faculty.

In 1980, Dr Stephen S.F. Hui donated a sum of $200,000 to establish the Hui Yin Hing Scholarship and Fellowship Trust Fund for the promotion of studies in geology and earth sciences by undergraduates and graduates. This Fund was increased by a second donation of $300,000 by Dr Hui in 1985.

In 1986, Mr Frank F.L. Hung donated a sum of $2.5 million to the University to support research in the physical sciences and to establish scholarships for postgraduate students.

In 1983, friends and colleagues of Emeritus Professor James Gibson donated a sum of over $120,000 for the establishment of a fund for the purpose of facilitating visits to the Department of Pathology by distinguished scholars from abroad.

The Jerome Chan Memorial Fund was established in 2000 in memory of the late Mr Justice Jerome Chan, for the purpose of sponsoring public lectures and providing scholarships and prizes to students.

In September 2006, Madam Kong Leong Pui Yee donated a sum of $1 million for the purpose of promoting postgraduate education and research in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in the Department of Surgery.

In 1973, Mr Kong Tak Yan donated $200,000 for the establishment of the Kong Tak Yan Visiting Professorship in the Department of Surgery. In 1989, the title of the Fund was changed to the Kong Tak Yan Surgical Fund to provide for the funding of other activities for the development of the Department of Surgery, in addition to visiting fellowships.

The K.P. Stephen Chang Memorial Fund was established in 1971 with donations from the friends of the late Dr K.P. Stephen Chang, Senior Lecturer in Medicine from 1949 to 1958. The purpose of the Fund is to maintain the excellence of the teaching of Medicine in Hong Kong and to render financial assistance to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students during their periods of training. The interest received from the investment of the Fund will be used to finance the K.P. Stephen Chang Visiting Professorship, the K.P. Stephen Chang Loan Fund, the K.P. Stephen Chang Travel Grant and the K.P. Stephen Chang Book Fund.

A sum of $500,000 was donated by Mr Lau Wong Fat in 1978 to establish a fund to support research on urbanization in the Department of Geography.

In 1985, Dr Lee Wing Tat donated a sum of $1 million for the promotion of postgraduate education and research in cardiothoracic surgery. This fund was increased by an additional donation of $500,000.

In 1987, Dr Lee Wing Tat donated a sum of $3 million for the purpose of promoting education and research in the Department of Medicine.

In 1986, Dr Lee Wing Tat donated a sum of $4.75 million to promote research in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

In 1986, Dr Lee Wing Tat donated a sum of $1.5 million for the purpose of promoting education and research in nephrology in the Department of Medicine.

In 1994 friends and colleagues of Professor W.S. Leung, the second post-war Professor of Electrical Engineering, donated cash of over one million Hong Kong dollars and two annual international return air tickets to the University to establish the Leung Wai Sun Fellowships to mark his retirement. The aim of the fellowship is to promote the education and development of hi-tech in Hong Kong.

In 1973, a sum of $200,000 was donated to the University by an anonymous donor, for the establishment of the Li Koon Chun Surgical Travelling Fellowship Fund, for the award of Fellowships to staff of the Department of Surgery, to visit overseas medical institutions, where they were expected to contribute to the academic activities of the host institutions. In 1989, the title of the Fund was changed to the Li Koon Chun Surgical Fund to provide for the funding of other activities for the development of the Department of Surgery, in addition to travelling fellowships.

In 1959, Mr Li Po Kwai donated $10,000 to establish the Li Po Kwai Prize in Surgery. In 1982, the title of the award was changed to the Li Po Kwai Travelling Fellowship in Surgery. In 1989, the Fund was renamed the Li Po Kwai Surgical Fund to provide for the funding of other activities for the development of the Department of Surgery, in addition to travelling fellowships.

In 2020, Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation made a generous donation to the ‘Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation and Dean’s Fund’ to continue its support of the Young Clinical Academics Scheme of the Faculty and to establish a suite of cancer-focused schemes with the following overall objectives: (a) to enhance collaboration between the Faculty and the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (HKSH) in cancer-related disciplines and those that could benefit from the advanced equipment available at HKSH; and (b) to establish a new platform of cutting-edge medical research, post-graduate education and clinical services through such collaborations.

In 1998, the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine received a donation from Dr Vincent Liu and family for establishment of a fund to support research, service and public education in Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and related neurological diseases.

In 2019, Lo Ying Shek Chi Wai Foundation pledged to donate $300,000 annually to the University of Hong Kong to establish the Lo Ying Shek Chi Wai Foundation Award for Young Investigator, which accord recognition to the author of a single item of research output published by an outstanding young clinician scientist at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine under the age of 45. The objective of the Award is to encourage impactful clinical/translational research that aims to improve medical knowledge/management.

The Fund was set up in 1986 with a generous donation of $8 million from Dr Louis Cha, for the purpose of supporting and promoting teaching and research in Chinese studies and East/West studies in the Faculty of Arts.

In 1992, Mrs Cheung So Yin Kay made a gift to the University of ownership of a property at Shaukiwan. The object of the gift is that the property or the proceeds of its disposal should be used to set up a fund for the encouragement of research and education in the field of economics.

In 1987, Madam Fung Wong Fung Ting of Hong Kong donated a sum of $1 million for the establishment of a fund to encourage and support clinical research in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine which are of direct relevance to patient work, diagnosis and care.

In 1993, the Mary Sun Medical Scholarships Fund renewed its annual donation of $175,000 for the year 1993–94 from the Mary Sun Medical Scholarships Fund administered by the Hong Kong Bank Trustee Limited to enable staff members in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine to receive overseas training and to attend conferences in the field of oncology.

The Medical Faculty Research Grant Fund was initiated in 1973 by a grant from the China Medical Board of New York, Inc. of US$200,000 given on the condition that a matching sum was obtained, for the purpose of supporting research projects of members of the full-time academic staff of departments in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. The Fund is open to donations and grants from other donors.

In 1991, the late Dr Clyde Y.C. Wu and Sir Gordon YS Wu donated a sum of $500,000 to establish an Exchange Professorship Scheme to enable distinguished physicians or medical scientists from China to visit clinical departments of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine and to participate in their teaching and research activities. The Scheme also allows full time teachers of clinical departments to visit medical institutions in China to undertake teaching and research with the view to increasing communication and collaborations between the medical communities of Hong Kong and the PRC.

In 2003, Mr Patrick Poon donated a sum of $800,000 for the purpose of sponsoring lecture series in Actuarial Science and exchange programmes with Actuarial Science teachers in Mainland China. This fund was increased by a second donation of $800,000 by Mr Poon in 2011.

In 1979, Miss Pauline Chan of Hong Kong donated a sum of $750,000 to establish the Pauline Chan Medical Research Fund for the purpose of supporting research by full-time academic staff of departments in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

Peter Willoughby Memorial Fund was established in 2000 to sponsor the memorial lecture in memory of the late Professor Peter Willoughby and his invaluable contribution to the Faculty of Law and legal education in Hong Kong.

In 1976, an anonymous donor from Brunei donated a sum of $24,000 for the establishment of a travel grant in memory of the late Professor P.M. Yap, first Professor of Psychiatry at the University, to enable a medical graduate of the University or a teacher in the University Department of Psychiatry to attend approved courses and/or to take relevant professional examinations in psychiatry overseas.

In 1995, a sum of $1 million was donated by the Estate of the late Mrs Poon Li Wai Hing to support educational activities on health and medical issues organized by the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

In August 2006, Professor Francis S.K. Lau donated a sum of $1 million for the purpose of promoting postgraduate education and research in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in the Department of Surgery.

In 1990, a donation of $200,000 was made to the University for the establishment of a Visiting Research Fellowship to be awarded to civil engineers or post-doctoral scholars from China to promote technology transfer in the field of civil engineering.

The Professor P.C. Ho Research and Development Fund in Reproductive Medicine was established in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology with donations to commemorate Professor Ho’s enormous contribution to the Department and its Division of Reproductive Medicine. The purpose of the fund is to support research activities and clinical development in reproductive medicine within the Department.

In June 2008, a Professor S.P. Chow Education Fund in Orthopaedic Surgery was set up in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology to commemorate Professor Chow’s retirement from the department. The purpose of the fund is to support students and trainees programmes and also acknowledge trainers and mentors who have made significant contributions to orthopaedic training in Hong Kong. It also facilitates visits to the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology by distinguished scholars from abroad, and support teaching and research in Orthopaedic Surgery.

In 2007, Ms Serena Yang donated a sum of $1 million to support the School of Nursing (formerly known as Department of Nursing Studies) in achieving its major objectives in developing educators and scientists for leadership in nursing, who are vital to strengthening our capacity in meeting future challenges. Part of the donation was used to establish the Serena Yang Fellowship in Nursing for academic staff in the department which aims to provide staff development opportunities for academic staff in the form of overseas studies and/or training for the purpose of teaching, research and clinical practice.

Ms Serena Yang Hsueh Chi has generously donated a sum of $7 million in support of various academic endeavours including sponsorship for non-local Social Innovation Internship under the Faculty’s twin themes — Social Innovation and Global Citizenship.

Lee Foundation Limited donated a sum of $2 million for the purpose of furthering research in linguistics, speech and hearing sciences with particular reference to Hong Kong and the neighbouring region. In 1993, the University, on the advice of the donor, agreed to split the Fund equally into two Funds, one of which to support research in gastroenterology and hepatology.

In 1987, the Simon K.Y. Lee Foundation Limited donated a sum of $2 million for the purpose of furthering research in linguistics, speech and hearing sciences with particular reference to Hong Kong and the neighbouring region. In 1993, the University, on the advice of the donor, agreed to split the Fund equally into two funds, one of which to continue to support research in linguistics, speech and hearing sciences.

In 2011, Dr Sin Wai-Kin made a generous donation to the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, to provide funding and academic support to local and visiting scholars, PhD students and recent PhD graduates who intend to participate in the Institute’s learning and teaching activities, research collaborations and visits or publication project relevant to the Institute’s research agenda.

The Visitorships were established in 1984 with an annual donation of £30,000 from the Sino-British Fellowship Trust for the purpose of promoting academic exchanges and collaborations with institutions in Mainland China and the United Kingdom.

S.K. Yee Medical Foundation is a charitable trust which was established by the late General S.K. Yee in November 1983 to establish medical services for the poor and sick and provide equipment and apparatus for such services.

In 1985 and 1988, the Organizing Committee of the Third and Fourth International Conference on Tall Buildings donated $187,705.35 and $211,504.27 respectively for the establishment of the Structural Engineering Fund to promote technology transfer and research in the field of structural engineering.

In 1996, a sum of $1 million was donated by Mr Suen Chi Sun to establish the Suen Chi Sun Research Fund in support of genetic studies on nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

In July 2000, Mr Sun Chieh Yeh has kindly donated $10 million to the Department of Medicine in support of the Division of Cardiology to advance research and/or clinical service in heart diseases.

In January 2000, Mr Sun Chieh Yeh donated a sum of $4 million for the purpose of promoting postgraduate education and research in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in the Department of Surgery.

The Fund was established in 1987, in commemoration of the centenary of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, by a donation of about $5.25 million from past graduates, teachers and friends of the Faculty for the purpose of promoting research in the Faculty and academic exchanges with medical schools in China.

In 1996 the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine received a donation from the alumni and friends of the Sun Yat-Sen University of Medicine (SUMS) to set up a fellowship scheme for SUMS academics to undertake clinical attachment, management and research training under the relevant Departments of the Faculty. The scheme will award up to 10 fellowships each year initially for three years from 1997.

In 1981, friends and colleagues of Professor S.Y. King, the first post-war Professor of Electrical Engineering, donated $229,851 to the University for the establishment of the S.Y. King Fellowships, the aim of which is to promote technology transfer in the field of electrical engineering.

In 1986, Mr W. Szeto donated $150,000 to the University for the establishment of the Szeto Wai Fellowship to promote technology transfer in the field of civil engineering.

In 1987, Mr Thomas H.C. Cheung donated a sum of $1.2 million for the purpose of promoting research in hepatitis in the Department of Medicine.

Established in 1983, the trust fund provides an annual sum for young marine biologists to undertake short periods of intertidal research at the Swire Institute of Marine Science.

Established in 1995, the trust fund provides an annual sum for marine biologists to undertake research on the Cape d’Aguilar Marine Reserve at the Swire Institute of Marine Science.

In 1987, Mrs Tsai Chu Mea Ling donated to the University $100,000 annually for 10 years, for the establishment of a research fund to support research in the areas of haematology and oncology, in the Department of Medicine.

The Fellowships were established in 1976 by a five-year grant of US$250,000 from the China Medical Board of New York, Inc. to enable selected persons from neighbouring countries to undertake further training in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. In 1982 the Scheme was extended for four years with the benefit of an additional grant of US$300,000. In 1987, the Scheme was further extended for a period of four years with an additional grant of US$400,000. In 1993, the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine resolved that the balance of the Scheme be used to provide 10 to 15 Fellowships for three months of special studies for graduates from China.

This scheme was established in 1976 by an endowment grant of US$250,000 from the China Medical Board of New York, Inc. to enable selected members of staff of the University to receive overseas training beyond their specialty or postgraduate degree, in an area of clinical medicine, basic medical science, medical education, or health care.

The University of Hong Kong/Columbia Presbyterian Medical College Research Grants were established in 1994 with a donation by Dr Clyde Wu for the support of joint projects conducted by the HKU, CPMC and Chinese institutions.

The Fund was established in 1978 by a donation of $2.75 million, for the purpose of providing grants for academic activities in the fields of urban and environmental studies.

In 1987, Dr Stephen T.K. Lim, former Reader in the Department of Surgery, donated a sum of $100,000 for the establishment of the Urology Development Fund for the purpose of education and research in, and development of, urology in the Department of Surgery.

In June 2004, a sum of $2.55 million was donated to the Department of Chemistry by the Vacoas II Trust Donation, to establish a Vacoas II Fund. Part of the interest generated from the fund shall be used for the scholarship awards in Chemistry.

In 1987, Mr Victor C.F. Hui offered to provide $50,000 a year, for two years in the first instance, for the purpose of supporting visiting scholars from China to undertake research work in the Department of Biochemistry. A further sum of $100,000 was given in 1992 with the purpose of allowing overseas visitors, not only from China, to visit the Department and staff/students from the Department to visit other overseas institutions.

In 2001, the Department of Surgery received a donation for the establishment of a scheme of Visiting Fellowships. The Fellowships scheme aims at training surgeons from medical centres in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and enabling them to better serve their community upon completion of the training.

In 1991, the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Limited donated a sum of $10 million for the purpose of supporting academic activities, including conference attendance, research staff appointment, equipment purchase and organization of seminars and conferences.

In 1973, the Wing Lung Bank donated a sum of $1 million for the purpose of establishing the Wing Lung Bank Medical Research Fund to encourage and support research by members of the full-time academic staff of departments in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

In 1984, friends and relatives of the late Mr T.S. Woo donated a sum of $250,000 for the establishment of a fund to encourage agricultural development research, in conjunction with the establishment of the former Kadoorie Agricultural Research Centre.

In 1976, Mr Wu Chung of Hong Kong donated a sum of $500,000 for the establishment of a fund to support research in the clinical departments of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

In 1982, the family of Mr and Mrs Wu Chung donated the sum of $800,000 to establish the Wu Chung Travelling Fellowships to assist academic staff of clinical departments in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine to undertake further training or visit medical institutions overseas.

In 1982, in commemoration of the retirement of Mr Wu Jieh-Yee as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Wing Lung Bank Limited after a long career of forty-six years in the banking industry, the younger generations of the Wu family, headed by Mr Michael Po-Ko Wu, Chairman, and Mr Patrick Po-Kong Wu, Executive Director and General Manager of the Wing Lung Bank Limited, donated a sum of $500,000 for the establishment of the Wu Jieh-Yee Research Fund to promote research on characteristics of students in the University.

In 2003, Ms Serena Yang Hsueh Chi donated a sum of $1.4 million to the Department of Psychology for establishing the Fund to support a variety of academic activities that can help maintain and enhance the academic and research excellence of the Department.

In 1996, Ms Serena Yang Hsueh Chi donated a sum of $1 million to the Department of Psychology for establishing this Research Fund to support full-time teaching staff development.

In September 2007, Madam Yuen Oi Lin donated a sum of $1 million for the purpose of promoting postgraduate education and research in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in the Department of Surgery.
