Named Lectureships and Visiting Professorships

In 2012, Ms Jennifer Hodgson donated a sum of $625,000 to establish the A.R. Hodgson Visiting Professorship in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology for a period of five years. The Visiting Professor appointed should be a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon or scientist, who has made recent and significant contributions in the orthopaedic field.

The Professorship was endowed with donations made by the late Mr Aw Boon Haw in 1951 and by his daughter, Dr Aw Sian, in 1978. A distinguished obstetrician or gynaecologist from another medical centre, or those in close relation with obstetrics and gynaecology specialty, is invited to visit the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and to deliver the Aw Boon Haw Memorial Lecture.

In 1986, the late Mr Wing Tat Lee donated a sum of US$300,000 for academic exchange between Boston University School of Medicine and the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

The Cheng Yu Tung Residence Fellowship was established in December 2010 and funded by the generous donation of Dr Cheng Yu Tung to the University. The Residence Fellowship allows prominent and established scholars to visit the Faculty of Law and participate in the Faculty’s teaching and research activities, with a view to enhancing the global visibility of the Faculty and the University.

The Professorship was established in 2009, with a sum of $20 million from the $400 million donation made by Dr Cheng Yu Tung in 2008, to enable distinguished and eminent scholars to be invited to visit the Faculty of Law and spend a short period of time in the Faculty on research and teaching, with a view to strengthening the University’s links with leading universities and situations as well as enhancing the global visibility of the Faculty.

In 2003, Madam Chin Lan-Hong agreed to sponsor the establishment of a Visiting Professorship in Surgery, for five years in the first instance, to enable distinguished academics and professionals in the health science field from other medical and health science centres to visit the Department of Surgery. The appointee may also be invited to deliver a lecture.

The Visiting Professorship, endowed with donations from friends and colleagues of Emeritus Professor C.T. Huang who retired in 1978, is used to enable persons of prominence in the field of microbiology or allied subjects to participate fully in the academic programme of the Department of Microbiology. In 2002, the visiting professorship was re-named as the C.T. Huang Memorial Visiting Professorship in Microbiology in memory of the late Professor C.T. Huang.

The David Todd Distinguished Lecture was established in 2017 for the purpose of maintaining the high standard of teaching, practice, and research in the Department of Medicine. Overseas speakers of the Lecture are invited to deliver lectures at medical forum or medical conferences.

The Professorship was established in 1982 with a donation from the family and friends of the late Dr Geraldine Mao-Ng, formerly part-time Lecturer in Psychology at the University. A distinguished scholar in applied psychology or related fields from overseas is invited by the Senate (on nomination by the Head of the Department of Psychology and recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences) to visit the Department of Psychology and to deliver the Dr Geraldine Mao-Ng Memorial Lecture.

The Scheme was established in 1983 with a donation from the family and friends of the late Dr Geraldine Mao-Ng, formerly part-time Lecturer in Psychology at the University. Scholars in applied psychology or related fields from overseas are appointed (on nomination by the Head of the Department of Psychology and recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences) to visit the Department of Psychology, conduct research, and may be invited to give seminars.

In 2000, $1.2 million was donated by Dr Tam Sai Kit to establish the Visiting Professorship in Orthopaedic Surgery. The fund is used to invite persons of prominence to visit the Department. It may also be used for academic, research and training developments in orthopaedic surgery and related disciplines.

The Professorship was endowed with a donation from Mr and Mrs Tso Chak Chun in memory of their daughter, the late Dr Elaine G.C.F. Tso, Lecturer in the Department of Physiology from 1980 to 1982, and a student of Art and Design in the former Department of Extra-mural Studies from 1979 to 1982. A distinguished physiologist from another institution is invited by the Head of the Department of Physiology to visit the Department to take part in teaching and research and to deliver the Elaine G.C.F. Tso Memorial Lecture.

The Professorship was endowed with donations from friends and colleagues of Professor Tan Sri G.B. Ong. Distinguished medical and non-medical professionals as well as other prominent personalities are invited by the Senate (on nomination by the Head of the Department of Surgery and recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Medicine) to visit the Department of Surgery and may be invited to deliver a G.B. Ong Lecture.

The George Choa Visiting Professorship was established in 1993 with sponsorship from Dr George Choa to enable visits from distinguished surgeons in otorhinolaryngology to the Department of Surgery.

In 2003, the family of the late Mrs Grace Tien agreed to sponsor the establishment of a Visiting Professorship in Nursing Studies, for five years in the first instance, to enable distinguished academics and professionals in Nursing Studies and related fields from other medical and health science centres to visit the School of Nursing. The appointee may also be invited to deliver a Grace Tien Lecture.

The Harry Fang Visiting Professorship was established in the then Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2003 through annual funding injections (HK$50,000 per visiting professorship) made available by Dr David Fang. The appointee should be a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon who has made recent and significant contributions in the orthopaedic field.

In 1982, the Hong Kong College of General Practitioners donated a sum of $100,000 to establish the Visiting Professorship in General Practice, to enable distinguished medical doctors from other territories to be invited to visit the Faculty of Medicine and to participate in the Faculty’s teaching and research activities in General Practice. The visiting professorship was renamed the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians Visiting Professorship in Family Medicine in July 1998, following the change of name of the College.

The Professorship was established in 2010 with a generous donation of $20 million from the Hung Hing Ying and Leung Hau Ling Charitable Foundation. The donation was matched dollar for dollar by the University to form an endowment fund. It aims to support the appointments of visiting distinguished scholars at a professorial level in science and engineering disciplines. Through this scheme, the University aspires to provide opportunities for teachers and students to interact with world-class scholars; provide the impetus for promoting the development of targeted academic areas; foster invaluable links with institutions leading in science and engineering; and enhance its leadership in the international academic community.

This scheme was inaugurated in 2008 through an initial donation of $15 million from the Hung Hing Ying and Leung Hau Ling Charitable Foundation. The donation was matched dollar for dollar by the University to form an endowment fund. This scheme is designed to attract scholars of top distinction (such as noted writers, artists and Nobel Laureates) to be resident at the University. It hosts visiting scholars renowned in their respective fields with the objective of enhancing and enriching humanities studies at the University, which in turn contributes to the arts and humanities culture of Hong Kong.

The Professorship was endowed in 2016 with a generous $20 million donation from the Hung Hing Ying and Leung Hau Ling Charitable Foundation and Kowloon Investment Company Limited. The donation was matched by the University dollar for dollar to form a permanent endowment. The Professorship was established to support the appointments of visiting scholars in the fields of the humanities and social sciences. It aims to provide the impetus to promote the development of path-breaking programmes in targeted areas; foster invaluable links with reputable institutions; enhance the University’s leadership in the international academic community; and provide a knowledge exchange platform for the Hong Kong community. 

The Professorship was endowed with the James Gibson Fund in memory of the service of Professor James Blackburn Gibson to the University and the community. Distinguished scholars in Pathology are invited to visit the Department of Pathology to promote in a practical manner teaching and research in the early detection, diagnosis and prevention of malignant diseases of importance in Hong Kong and to deliver the James Gibson Lecture.

In mid-2007, an anonymous donor donated $1 million to the Department of Clinical Oncology to support the invitation of overseas expert to visit the Department for educational and research activities. In early 2008, Professor Jonathan Sham Shun-tong, former Head of the Department of Clinical Oncology, donated another $500,000 also to support similar activities. The purpose of Jonathan S.T. Sham Visiting Professorship is to facilitate visits to the Department of Clinical Oncology by distinguished scholars from abroad.

The Professorship was endowed with the K.P. Stephen Chang Memorial Fund. A distinguished physician from another medical centre is invited by the Senate (on nomination by the Professor of Medicine and recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Medicine) to visit the Department of Medicine for about a month and to deliver the K.P. Stephen Chang Memorial Lecture.

The Professorship was established in 2018 with a generous donation of $20 million from 117 donors in honour of Dr the Honourable Leong Che-Hung. The annual investment return will be used to support at least one Distinguished Visiting Professor each year, bringing world scholars with top distinction in academic and community leadership to the HKU campus.

In 2004, the Management Committee of the Leslie Wright: HK-China Legal Fund has agreed to set aside a budget of $100,000 for the establishment of a number of Leslie Wright Fellowships in the Faculty of Law to support scholars currently engaged in teaching and research in China (including Mainland China, Taiwan and Macau) to visit the Faculty of Law for the purpose of giving lectures, seminars or conference presentations, or engaging in joint research with teachers in the Faculty.

The Professorship was endowed with a donation from the Lions Club of Tai Ping Shan, Hong Kong, to enable distinguished physicians from other medical centres to be invited to visit the Department of Medicine and to participate in the department’s teaching and research activities.

The Exchange Professorship was endowed in 1991 with a donation from the family of the late Mrs Lucy Fung Tseng (Mrs Tseng Fung Hiu Wan), through Dr and Mrs C.Y.C. Wu in memory of the late Mrs Lucy Fung Tseng and in honour of Professor D. Todd, Head of the Department of Medicine from 1974 to 1989. Distinguished physicians or medical scientists from China are invited to visit the Department of Medicine and to participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department during the visits. Full-time teachers of the Department of Medicine can also visit the medical centres in China to undertake teaching and research.

In 2012, $10 million was donated by MaMa Charitable Foundation to establish a Visiting Professorship in Buddhist Studies. The endowed fund will be used to support visiting scholars of top distinction in Buddhist Studies to visit the Centre of Buddhist Studies to participate in research and teaching, and to deliver public lectures.

The M.B. Lee Visiting Professorship was established in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 1973 through funds made available by the late Mr M.B. Lee. The appointee should be a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon or scientist who has made recent and significant contributions in the orthopaedic field, preferably in spine surgery. Nominees shall be proposed by the Specialty Chiefs and nominated by the Head of Department to the Board of Faculty of Medicine for appointment. The Visiting Professors shall be invited to visit the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology for a period of about one week and, during that time, to deliver a lecture (or lectures) and engage in the teaching and research work of the Department.

The Professorship was established in 2014 with donations from friends, colleagues and past students of the late Professor A.J.S. McFadzean, Professor of Medicine from 1948 to 1974. Eminent clinical scientists are invited to visit the Department of Medicine to teach, conduct clinical rounds and research meetings for a period.

The Professorship was endowed in 2008 with a generous $20 million donation from Dr Mok Hing-Yiu to support the appointments of visiting scholars. The donation was matched by the University dollar for dollar to form a permanent endowment. The Professorship aims to attract top academics to spend time at HKU to enhance the university’s visibility in the international community and to establish links with institutions leading in specific disciplines.

The Professorship was endowed with a donation from the family of Mr and Mrs Wu Chung to commemorate the diamond wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Wu Chung in 1979. Distinguished physicians from other medical centres are invited to visit the Department of Medicine for a period of one to two weeks, and to participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department.

The Exchange Professorship was endowed in 1991 with a donation from Dr C.Y.C. Wu and Mr G.Y.S. Wu. Distinguished physicians or medical scientists from China are invited to visit the clinical departments of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine and to participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department during the visits. Full-time teachers of the clinical departments can also visit medical centres in China to undertake teaching and research.

The Professorship was established in 1985 with a donation from the family of the late Mrs Ho Tam Kit Hing to enable distinguished medical teachers in the field of nephrology, including dialysis and transplantation, from other medical schools or centres to be invited to visit the Department of Medicine and to participate in the teaching and/or research activities of the Department.

The Professorship was established in 1986 with part of an anonymous donation to enable distinguished psychiatrists from other medical centres to visit the Department of Psychiatry for a period of not less than two weeks, and to participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department during his visit.

In 2003, Mr Peter K.C. Chan donated a sum of $1.5 million, one-third of which is used to invite distinguished scholars or renowned practitioners of international and/or regional standing to visit the Department of Architecture to deliver lectures, conduct seminars and workshops, conduct research and to participate generally in the teaching of the Department of Architecture.

In 2000, donations were received to establish the Professor C.Y. Yeung Fellowships/Visiting Professorships in Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine to commemorate Professor Yeung’s contribution to the department, subsequent to his retirement from the University. The goal of these Fellowships/Visiting Professorships is to develop further network with other institutes in the Mainland and in other countries and to enhance academic exchange.

In 2009, Professor Richard Yu donated the sum of $500,000 for the purpose of enhancing the standard of practice in Internal Medicine. Renowned local and international experts are invited by the Department of Medicine to deliver lectures at medical forum or medical conferences.

In 1989, Mr Rowdget W. Young donated $100,000 to establish a visiting fellowship in the fields of property law and commercial law.

The Professorship was established in 2008 with a generous donation from Professor Saw Swee Hock, Founding Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics from 1969 to 1971, to fund the visits of up to two weeks by distinguished scholars to the Department. Visiting Professors are invited to participate in the Department’s teaching and research activities.

The Professorship was endowed in 2011 with a generous donation of $20 million from Dr David Sin Wai-Kin to support the appointments of distinguished visiting scholars in the humanities. The donation was matched by the University dollar for dollar to form a permanent endowment. The establishment of this Professorship will have a substantial impact on the intensity and quality of interactions between world-class scholars and teachers and students at the University.

The Professorship was established with a donation by the late Mr S.Y. Mak to enable distinguished psychiatrists from other medical centres to be invited to visit the Department of Psychiatry and to participate in the department’s teaching and research activities.

The William M.W. Mong Visiting Research Fellowship in Engineering, funded by donations from the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Ltd, is established to encourage academic staff of the Faculty of Engineering to engage in international collaborative research with overseas distinguished researchers.

In 2003, Dr Buddy Y.K. Wong agreed to sponsor the establishment of a Distinguished Visiting Scholarship in Otorhinolaryngology and in April 2018, the existing scheme was revived and renamed as Wong Hau-yuen Visiting Professorship in Otorhinolaryngology at the Department of Surgery. This scheme is to enable eminent academics and professionals in the health science field from other medical and health centres/institutes to visit the Department of Surgery. The appointee may also be invited to deliver a lecture.

In 1996, Miss Yang Hsueh Chi donated $1 million to establish the Yang Hsueh Chi Visiting Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery for the purpose of inviting persons of prominence to visit the Department for academic, research and training developments in orthopaedic surgery and related disciplines. Dr Yang made another two donations, in early 2016 and late 2017, totaling $2 million to support similar activities.

The fellowship was established in 2005 with donations from engineering alumni and friends of Professor Y.C. Cheng. Distinguished scholars in Engineering are invited to visit the Faculty for one to three weeks to deliver public lectures and participate in academic activities.
